How to convert steps to distance

The maths is simple: distance = number of steps × step length. The only thing you really need is your step length — the distance covered by a single step. Multiply it by your step count and you have your distance; divide a distance by it and you have the steps.

If you do not know your step length, this calculator can estimate it from your height, with separate factors for walking and running. For the most accurate result, though, measure your own: count your steps over a marked 20-metre stretch and divide 20 by the number of steps.

How many steps are in a mile?

The popular answer is "about 2,000", and for average walking that is close. But it depends entirely on step length — taller people and faster runners take fewer, longer steps. Here is how step length changes the steps-per-mile and steps-per-km figures.

Step lengthSteps per mileSteps per km
0.65 m (walking, shorter)2,4761,538
0.75 m (average walking)2,1461,333
0.90 m (brisk / tall)1,7881,111
1.10 m (running)1,463909
1.30 m (fast running)1,238769

How far is 10,000 steps?

The famous 10,000-steps target comes from a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing campaign, not from science — but it remains a handy daily goal. At an average 0.75 m step length, 10,000 steps is about 7.5 km, or 4.7 miles. Taller walkers cover more; if some of those steps are running, the distance climbs further.

Whatever your target, remember that a step counter and a GPS watch will rarely agree exactly — step length shifts constantly with pace, fatigue, and terrain.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps are in a mile?

It depends on your step length, but a common average is about 2,000 steps per mile for walking and around 1,500 to 1,700 for running, where steps are longer. Divide 1,609 metres by your step length in metres to get your exact figure — this calculator does it for you.

How many steps are in a kilometre?

Roughly 1,250 to 1,550 steps per kilometre for most people walking, and fewer when running. The exact number is 1,000 divided by your step length in metres — for a 0.75 m step that is about 1,333 steps per km.

How far is 10,000 steps?

For a typical 0.75 m step length, 10,000 steps is about 7.5 km or 4.7 miles. Taller people with longer steps cover more, and running steps cover more still. Enter your own step length or height above for a personalised distance.

How do I find my step length?

The most accurate way is to count your steps over a known distance — for example, count steps for 20 metres and divide 20 by the number of steps. Alternatively, estimate it from height: walking step length is roughly 0.414 times your height, while running steps are longer.

Are running steps longer than walking steps?

Yes. Running step length is considerably longer than walking, and it grows as you speed up. That means a mile of running takes fewer steps than a mile of walking. This calculator lets you choose walking or running when estimating step length from height.
